From Welder to Project Leader
My name is Jason Drazenovic, and I am a Water Well Drilling Project Leader working across four sites in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
My drilling career began in 2009, after previously working as a boilermaker/welder. That background gave me a strong practical foundation for my first drilling role on dual rotary rigs, where welded casing was an important part of the operation.
In May 2012, I joined Boart Longyear as a Relief Driller when the company established its water well division. Not long after, I moved into the Main Driller role on WW3, a new T130 dual rotary rig. That opportunity helped me continue building my technical knowledge, confidence and experience in the field.
After several years, I began filling in as a Supervisor and eventually moved into the role full time. Over the next 11 years, I led crews, managed drilling operations and worked closely with clients and stakeholders. That experience taught me that successful drilling projects depend on much more than technical expertise. Safety, communication, planning, people management and problem-solving all play an important role.
I continued developing those skills through a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management and additional training. In November 2024, I stepped into the Project Leader role. Today, I combine more than 15 years of field and operational experience with responsibility for project performance, planning, commercial matters, stakeholder engagement and the development of our people.
One of the things I have enjoyed most throughout my career is that the learning never stops. The industry continues to evolve, and every site brings different people, landscapes and challenges.
Looking back, my path from welder to Relief Driller, Main Driller, Supervisor and Project Leader has been built on experience, continuous learning and a willingness to take on opportunities. For anyone considering a career with Boart Longyear, my advice is simple: be willing to learn, work hard and embrace opportunities when they arise. Boart Longyear has played a major role in both my professional and personal development.
