From Offsider to Driller
My name is Kelly Henare, and I am a Driller working in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
I originally entered the mining industry working in utilities, but I knew fairly quickly that I wanted to become more involved in the industry. That eventually led me to drilling. I joined Boart Longyear as a diamond drilling offsider and have since worked my way up to Driller. Today, I run an LF160 rig package in the Pilbara.
Becoming a driller was something I wanted to work toward from the beginning. There was a lot to learn, and it was not always easy, but I was fortunate to have people along the way who took the time to teach me and give me an opportunity. Looking back at where I started and where I am now is something I am really proud of.
My role today involves much more than operating the rig. I am responsible for running the rig day to day, making sure we work safely and efficiently, looking after the equipment and helping train the crew around me.
Training is one of my favourite parts of the job. I remember what it was like to be the person who did not know something and had to learn it for the first time. Being able to pass that knowledge on, and then seeing someone become more confident, take on more responsibility and eventually help the next new person is very rewarding.
I have also learned how important the people around you are. You spend a lot of time together on site and away from family and friends, so having a crew that communicates, looks out for one another and can still have a laugh together makes a big difference.
For anyone considering a career with Boart Longyear, I would say be willing to learn, ask questions and give things a go. Everyone starts somewhere. Drilling is hard work and there is always more to learn, but if you are willing to put in the effort and take the opportunities that come your way, there is plenty of room to progress.
